Apple Overtakes Samsung to Become the World’s No. 1 Phone Seller
Apple has finally dethroned Samsung to become the world’s number one phone seller, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC). Apple’s iPhone series accounted for 20% of the global market share in 2023, with close to 235 million shipments, while Samsung’s shipments slumped double-digits to 226.6 million. This marks the first time that Samsung has lost the top spot since 2010. The shift in power comes as Apple reached an all-time high market share and secured the top position in the smartphone market. The rise of foldable phones and talks about artificial intelligence on smartphones are adding more competition to the market.
Apple’s success can be attributed to the increasing popularity of premium devices and smart trade-in. The company has been selling iPhones at premium prices, while Samsung has been offering phones at the high-end and mid-to-high-end segments for profitability. However, more consumers are joining the iPhone crowd, overcoming the cost hurdles. Apple’s ongoing success and resilience are in large part due to the increasing trend of premium devices.

The iPhone 15, which debuted ahead of the busy holiday season, helped Apple overtake Samsung in Q4 2023. The company shipped 72.1 million units, while Samsung’s shipments only reached 59.5 million units for a 16.3% market share. Although Apple has long been a popular smartphone maker, the company has never topped the global smartphone rankings, according to IDC.
Apple’s new position as the top phone seller globally signals an interesting time for the smartphone industry. Samsung’s fall from the top spot shows how competitive the market is, with different companies striving for the top position and pushing the boundaries of technology. The future seems promising, with new innovations and intense competition shaping the smartphone landscape.
