Speaking at the press conference, he discussed topics such as team building, player bonding and new challenges. India will face Afghanistan in the first T20I in Mohali on Thursday.

Highlights:

  • Three match T20 series between India and Afghanistan.
  • No disciplinary action against Ishan Kishan-Shreyas Iyer: Dravid.
  • Iyer-Kishan has been left out of the Afghan T20 series.

India will play against Afghanistan in the first T20I match in Mohali on Thursday. Team India’s head coach Rahul Dravid has termed the last bilateral T20 series of Team India before the 2024 T20 World Cup as the most important. Speaking at the press conference, he discussed things like team planning, player bonding, and new challenges.

In Mohali, there has been significant speculation regarding the non-selection of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer for the T20 series against Afghanistan, with some suggesting disciplinary reasons. However, ahead of the first T20 match on January 11, head coach Rahul Dravid addressed these speculations in a press conference, seeking to put an end to the rumors.

Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has confirmed that Ishan Kishan, the left-handed wicket-keeper batsman, has not been selected for the T20 series against Afghanistan due to his unavailability for selection. Dravid has also made it clear that Kishan will return to the national team once he is available for selection. Kishan played his last match for India in the third T20 International against Australia in Guwahati in November last year.

Ishan Kishan’s limited appearances in the Indian team between October last year and January this year have raised questions, especially considering the team’s busy schedule during this period. Despite India playing 14 ODIs and 8 T20Is, Kishan was overlooked for selection.

In the ODI series against South Africa, KL Rahul was chosen as the wicketkeeper. Furthermore, during the home T20 series against Australia, the team management opted to replace Ishan Kishan with Jitesh Sharma for the fourth match. These decisions have led to discussions about the factors influencing Kishan’s opportunities within the national team.

No disciplinary action was taken against Shreyas Iyer

There have been rumors on social media that Shreyas Iyer was dropped from the T20 series against Afghanistan due to disciplinary issues. However, head coach Rahul Dravid has denied these rumors, stating that Iyer’s exclusion was due to the team’s selection strategy. Dravid clarified that there are many talented batsmen in the squad, and it is not always possible to include everyone in the playing eleven.

He further added that during his discussions with the selectors, there was no mention of any disciplinary issues related to Iyer. Dravid also expressed his disappointment at Iyer’s exclusion, as he is a good player.

Rohit Sharma-Yashaswi Jaiswal is the opener.

“We are definitely happy with what Yashaswi Jaiswal has done for the team as an opening batsman. It gives us a left-right batting combination in the top order. However, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are also likely to open the innings for Team India in T20 cricket in the future,” he said.
