New Delhi: Dr Manmohan Singh, one of the tallest leaders of Indian politics and a former Prime Minister of the nation, passed away at the age of 92 on Thursday, December 26, 2024. The veteran Congress leader was brought to AIIMS Delhi following a health scare. As the country mourns the passing of a visionary leader, speculation is rife about whether or not Friday, December 27, will be designated a public holiday in the spirit of paying respect.

Dr. Singh, who was highly regarded for his integrity and economic foresight, passed away around 9:51 PM after suffering a cardiac arrest attributable to age-related health issues. His death was confirmed by AIIMS Delhi, which said he could not be revived despite immediate intervention.

Holiday Declared to Honor Manmohan Singh
In respect of Dr. Singh’s passing, the government declared December 27 as a national mourning day in memory for his unparalleled contributions to the nation. In respect, schools, colleges, government offices and banks will remain shut. A statement on Tuesday said, in line with convention, that the death of a former Prime Minister is “marked with a national day of mourning”.
Who Was Dr. Manmohan Singh?
Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh rose from humble beginnings to become one of India’s most respected leaders. A celebrated economist, he is credited with initiating India’s economic liberalization in 1991 as the Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao.
Dr. Singh served as India’s 13th Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, leading the country through an era of unprecedented economic growth. His tenure was marked by key reforms, including the Indo-U.S. Civil Nuclear Agreement and major infrastructure projects.
