On Tuesday, Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister, stated that the country owes Manmohan Singh, the former prime minister, for economic reforms.
Speaking at the TIOL Awards 2022 event, Mr. Gadkari stated that India requires a liberal economic policy and the intention to give its benefits to the poor.
He said that the economic reforms initiated by Mr Singh in 1991 as finance minister gave India a new direction and ushered in a free economy.
“Liberal economy Ke Karan Desh Ko name Disha mil, Manmohan Sing ke ye desh Reeni Hai (The country owes Manmohan to liberalization that gave a fresh direction),” Mr. Gadkari stated.
He said that he was able to raise funds to build roads in Maharashtra during his time as a minister in Maharashtra, in the mid-1990s, because of the former prime minister’s economic reforms.
Mr Gadkari stated that liberal economic policies are for farmers and the poor.
A portal called TaxIndiaOnline organized the awards function.
He said that China was an excellent example of how a liberal economic policy can be used to help any country develop.
He said that India needs more capital investment to accelerate economic growth.
The road transport and highways minister stated that the NHAI also raises money from the general public for highway construction.
According to Mr. Gadkari, his ministry is currently constructing 26 green expressways. He also stated that he does not face a lack of money. He stated that the toll revenue for NHAI will rise to Rs 1.40 lakh crore in 2024, from Rs 40,000 crore per year.
