On January 20, 2024, the police registered an FIR against the Congress’s ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ led by its leader Rahul Gandhi for deviating from the permitted route in Assam’s Jorhat town. According to an official, the march took a different turn in the town, leading to a “chaotic situation” in the area.
Some people fell due to the sudden rush of people, and a stampede-like situation was created. A suo motu FIR has been registered at Jorhat Sadar Police Station against the Yatra and its chief organizer.
The ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ entered Assam on January 19 through Haluwating in Sivasagar district from Nagaland. Gandhi embarked on the next leg of his journey by bus from Tuli in Nagaland early in the morning, eventually arriving in Assam at approximately 9:45 am. Upon his arrival at Haluwating, he was welcomed by hundreds of party workers.
Upon his arrival, the national flag was handed over to Assam Congress leaders, marking the commencement of the eight-day journey within the state. Led by the Congress MP, the 6,713-kilometer-long march commenced on January 14 from Manipur and is scheduled to conclude on March 20 in Mumbai. The Assam leg of this extensive march is set to continue until January 25.
Addressing a rally in Kohima, Rahul Gandhi said the Congress had earlier conducted the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from South India to Kashmir with the idea to “bring together different cultures, religions, and languages.” This time, the party decided to have another yatra starting from the northeast as the region is “very central to the idea of India.
