Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Urges Congress Workers to Strengthen Party in Coastal Districts.

25th January 2024, Mangaluru

Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister and state PCC president, D K Shivakumar, has called upon party workers in the coastal districts to fortify the Congress party, aiming to restore its former eminence in the region. He made this appeal during a workers’ meeting at the district Congress committee office on Wednesday evening. Shivakumar also announced that the state-level convention of the party will be held in Mangaluru next month to lay the groundwork for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The convention, jointly organized by the district units of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, is expected to be attended by AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and other national leaders.

Shivakumar emphasized the need to activate the party at the booth-level by engaging more youth and raising awareness about the benefits of the guarantees implemented by the Congress government in the state. He stressed that the party requires more activists at the booth-level than leaders and urged for the resolution of differences among leaders in the Sullia block of DK district. Despite the party’s limited success in the last Assembly elections in the two districts, Shivakumar encouraged efforts to transform the Congress into a cadre-based party with the active involvement of result-oriented workers.

In a separate event, Shivakumar participated in the annual conference of Karnataka state Sunni Yuvajana Sangha (SYS), where he affirmed the Siddramaiah-led government’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of minorities. While refraining from commenting on contentious issues raised at the conference, including the hijab, he emphasized that the future of the country rests in the hands of the youth. When questioned about the hijab issue and related religious matters, Shivakumar stated that these matters are currently before the court and should be addressed within the framework of the law and the Constitution, ensuring the protection of the rights of all religions.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s call to strengthen the Congress in coastal districts comes at a crucial time as the party gears up for the state-level convention and the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The party’s efforts to consolidate its presence in these regions will likely have a significant impact on its electoral prospects and overall political influence.
