Supporting India’s permanent membership in the UN Security Council, the US has said that the UNSC of 70 years ago does not reflect the realities of today. America’s top diplomat has once again advocated the inclusion of G-4 countries in the top body of the United Nations General Assembly.
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said in her speech in Tokyo during a visit to Japan that Russia and China are the only two countries in the UNSC that oppose the expansion of the 15-member Security Council. He said that in the past, the US along with China and Russia had agreed that they do not want an expansion of the Security Council. However, in 2021, the US withdrew from it and said that it wants to reform the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) by expanding it. The council currently has 193 members, but Africa, Latin America and many other regions are not represented. That is why we have supported their permanent membership of the Security Council in discussions with the G-4 members – Japan, Germany, India and Brazil. U.S. President Joe Biden also endorsed permanent membership for these countries in the Security Council again last year.
